University Changes Business Focus and Launches Six New Industry Degrees

A revamped business school has launched six new degrees to support global advances in technology, marketing and industry.

Falmouth University unveiled the innovative two-year programmes ahead of the 2018/19 academic year.

From September, students can take courses focused on business with digital marketing, data analytics, entrepreneurship, management, financial technology (FinTech) and business development management.

The shorter length of the degrees reflects market demand and focus on learning by doing and thinking creatively.

Students will be able to apply contemporary business theory to real-life practice by starting up their own companies or developing business-related projects.

Director of the School, Professor Chris Jones arrived in Falmouth last autumn from Wrexham Glyndwr University in North Wales with the aim of preparing students for the world of work.

He says their hands-on approach to work-based learning and experience is a huge strength, and no university is better placed to ensure its students are “work-ready” on graduating.
“Since joining Falmouth University I’ve been impressed by the attitude to encouraging students to be forward-thinking and creative with their business ideas,” he said.

“We have an opportunity here to support the next generation of entrepreneurs and business leaders, and the ideas they have are already fascinating, focused on different sectors and collaboration.”
Professor Jones added: “The new degrees will look at other areas of business and industry, including finance, management and the analytical elements of industry.

“The students’ journey and learning is vital – and that’s the case for every degree here at Falmouth – but it’s also important they are looking ahead to life after university and are work-ready when they leave us.

“That means we must hone their skills and breed a culture of independent-thinking.”

Falmouth Business School launched in 2015 and challenges the traditional model that separates education from real business.

Ranked 15th for business in the following year’s Guardian University Guide, it has developed from Falmouth’s 110+ year legacy of creative entrepreneurship and helps students become commercially minded individuals who think differently.

Professor Chris Jones has himself an industrial background having worked for consumer goods giant Unilever, and is excited for the future.
“Our ‘doing it for real’ approach will give our graduates a distinct advantage since they experience how real business works as part of their studies rather than be bombarded with endless theory in lecture theatres,” he said.

“Added to the fact that all our new degrees are completed in two years rather than the traditional three, means that the offer to study Business at Falmouth University should be a compelling choice for any young person leaving school or college.”
